0:00 Welcome to "An I in the Air? Talk About Tuesday"
0:04 This is a first. Doing an interview with Parker
0:08 who started with the school when he was
0:12 five when the school just started
0:16 and is now graduating this year. So
0:20 Parker, do you have anything to start off saying?
0:24 Hello listeners. James has never done an interview. We've talked many times
0:28 but I don't know what kind of questions he would
0:32 be prepared to ask.
0:36 So you've been through many phases of the school
0:40 Church of Messiah
0:44 St. John's Church, Church of Messiah Part 2
0:48 Aaron Holder and then
0:52 Pandemic Online and you also dabble in being in person.
0:56 So, what do you think of all those different experiences?
1:00 What's your viewpoint on how
1:04 the school has evolved over that whole time?
1:08 When you think about it in like a ten, eleven year experience
1:12 it feels very spread out. It feels like a long, a long time.
1:16 I think certain
1:20 parts of that I have more nostalgia towards like when I was younger
1:24 for one and then at St. John's and then like I can recall
1:28 more vividly memories from a few years ago at the
1:32 building we're at now and you know ever since the pandemic
1:36 it's just kind of a blur and it's all
1:40 it's a very different school. So it's hard to say
1:44 like where it's come to because right now it doesn't feel like school
1:48 in kind of how it would if there wasn't a pandemic you know or if
1:52 it wasn't normal I think. And you've also
1:56 started working somewhere this year?
2:00 Does that also kind of further distance you from the school? Like you're already like
2:04 I'm making money, I'm out there. Yeah, I mean definitely.
2:08 I mean if I was able to make money I can drive myself
2:12 you know and I don't have to be at school every day
2:16 I'm taking myself where I want to go and making money and
2:20 it just feels less relevant you know what's happening here
2:24 to what kind of my everyday life was.
2:28 So are there other workers your age
2:32 at this place? There are people who are like you know 18,
2:36 19, 20 but I'm probably the youngest. There's one guy
2:40 who's 20 now who started when he was 16 like as an intern
2:44 so yeah. And how does that feel? Does it feel
2:48 like do they seem just like you?
2:52 Pretty much. I mean I'm called the kid because I'm
2:56 you know the kid but I'm not like outwardly you know
3:00 like different from everyone else you know and I think
3:04 I mean I always talk to people who are older than me, the staff
3:08 all my friends who are older. I have friends who are the same age like 20,
3:12 21 now. So yeah
3:16 I mean I always feel comfortable even just talking to my managers in like a fun way.
3:20 So no but it all kind of feels
3:24 like there's not like an age thing because that's
3:28 like in real life that's not really a thing. They are more surprised to know how
3:32 young I am like because not all of them you know I don't know everyone's age who I work with
3:36 so someone's like you're 17 you know
3:40 like what are you doing here and like what you know it's just crazy so.
3:44 It also helps with the mask it's harder to tell. Yeah
3:48 my identity is like quite hidden you know like someone
3:52 saw me without a mask and was like you actually have a face and hair
3:56 you know like without that. I'm filling my stuff with yours.
4:00 Okay. Well you also
4:04 let's see
4:08 you've done a variety of clerkships during
4:12 your times here.
4:16 Admissions clerk for a long time
4:20 JC clerk for quite a bit. Can you do school meeting clerk?
4:24 I think I subbed in as JC
4:28 clerk but I never was elected which is strange like I never decided to
4:32 do that. I think I was like
4:36 just insecure about like writing up the agenda and like
4:40 you know reading all this stuff out when I was younger.
4:44 You weren't bothered by running a big meeting or? No I mean
4:48 I think I had run meetings with JC got big at certain points and you know.
4:52 The clerkships that I
4:56 mostly enjoyed you know were JC clerk and like instead of admissions
5:00 clerk or kind of like dabbling in the other stuff
5:04 like it's much more fun to be part of the actual school than to talk with like parents
5:08 which really kind of wasn't as enjoyable.
5:12 You were also involved in the hiring
5:16 processes right? You weren't a hiring clerk though. But I came
5:20 to the meetings and was on the committee. How was that experience?
5:24 That was really interesting to like
5:28 think from the point of view of like just hiring
5:32 someone and like what are we looking for and really judging these people
5:36 like writing and just like ability and then figuring out what
5:40 we actually were looking for and having to change our goals.
5:44 And yeah it was really fun to do that I think and
5:48 I remember we always would have a good laugh in those meetings
5:52 you know like the highlight of the week and also
5:56 yeah it was good.
6:00 Do you miss doing any of that stuff?
6:04 Or is it like that was a great experience? Moving on. Yeah I think really moving on
6:08 you know I couldn't see myself like I mean maybe it'd be fun to
6:12 hire a new staff but like being in JC
6:16 for a few hours or talking to
6:20 parents about it like I just it feels very I feel very weird right now
6:24 to do that because it's been years I mean even before the pandemic
6:28 I think I stepped down because I was like I spent like you know
6:32 like three four years like I was going to every meeting and like
6:36 really holding all this clerkship you know on and off JC clerk
6:40 for all this time and then I thought like you know I had served the school for so long
6:44 like I wanted to focus on myself
6:48 not that I didn't do things for myself when I was a clerk but you know
6:52 I was like I want to take a step back and see what else. Do you have any regret of spending all that time
6:56 during the clerkships? I mean there are other things I could have done
7:00 but it wasn't a waste of time or like you know a bad way to use my time
7:04 there are other ways I would have regretted more you know
7:08 like I'm happy I think I participated maybe just not for the length you know
7:12 of how much I committed. Do you have any
7:16 future thoughts about being involved in Sudbury schools
7:20 like if you have kids or being a staff member someday or anything?
7:24 Yeah I don't think I want to be a staff member. Or starting one?
7:28 Yeah see that's just not what I think I'm passionate about
7:32 I think I used to always say like I was the principal of the school
7:36 I like to run the school but then I would say like I could never be a staff
7:40 because I don't like children like I used to say that and I don't feel like I don't know if I'd say that
7:44 now like you know but yeah it's just really
7:48 not what I think I am called towards
7:52 doing like I yeah I don't think I'll ever be a staff or start a school
7:56 I think if I have kids like if this school is still
8:00 you know an option like that would be awesome to see how it works
8:04 for them.
8:08 Oh you've also been doing a thesis this year?
8:12 Yeah I've been trying to do that. How's that experience?
8:16 I don't know I mean it's been difficult in a lot of ways
8:20 I think more difficult because I've been out of the school you know like
8:24 in past years me and my other friends who's also writing these thesis and we're helping each other
8:28 on each other's teams
8:32 we're talking about how last year we had friends who were writing and they would be in the library
8:36 and they could show us what they're working on and ask for feedback in the moment
8:40 and just have conversations and for us if we're not
8:44 at school it I mean we feel even more kind of detached from that experience
8:48 and you can't just kind of be with someone or in an environment
8:52 where you can just ask for feedback or have people around you
8:56 and so it's been I think different than any other
9:00 Sudbury graduates have never really experienced this
9:04 but I'm managing to write
9:08 something and it'll be what it is
9:12 Looking forward to doing the defense part?
9:16 Yeah that'll be the fun part. It's hard to figure out
9:20 that maybe your writing doesn't sound exactly how you want it to but I feel
9:24 excited you know and like if it was just talking
9:28 to people like you know I've always known how to just talk to people I feel like
9:32 especially Sudbury staff I feel like are very easy to talk to
9:36 so yeah that part's going to be cool
9:40 Do you have any future plans for post school?
9:44 Or do you want to share? Feel free not to share
9:48 I mean it's hard to have plans I think because a lot of things feel
9:52 uncertain about like the future who knows what's going to happen. I know that I really
9:56 want to travel you know like as much as I can like that's just a goal
10:00 you know that I want to make happen. Any particular destinations or just
10:04 anywhere? I would literally travel anywhere I mean specifically. Iowa?
10:08 I would recommend Iowa. Iowa's awesome. They have a tree in springtime
10:12 that flowers. It's amazing. Iowa
10:16 is an option. I lived in Iowa so that's why I can make a joke.
10:20 It's a great stage. But I was thinking like you know
10:24 to a different country you know
10:28 going to I don't know France
10:32 Korea anywhere yeah. Do you care about being able to speak the language?
10:36 Yeah I do. I've also discovered that I really enjoy
10:40 like learning languages and working towards them. Like if I was to travel any place
10:44 and I had enough time in advance you know I'd want to just put in
10:48 a time like every week just to learn some of that. Like you know and that would be
10:52 part of why I'd want to live somewhere longer term to be immersed
10:56 and speak the language. So that's why I've been trying to learn
11:00 Korean and Spanish ever since the pandemic.
11:04 Speaking of learning, you also learned how to
11:08 do piano right? Yeah I started taking lessons
11:12 a few years ago and picked it up.
11:16 And I don't take lessons as much and just kind of play for fun but like
11:20 play in some pretty hard pieces now. I've heard that you gave a great performance
11:24 in the fall. What performance in the fall did I? On the beach.
11:28 Oh yes I played for a wedding that happened on the beach and
11:32 that was definitely the most nervous I'd ever been. But I played
11:36 in like a recital before so I think in a way I just kind of accepted the anxiety
11:40 I was just like this will happen. I'll get past it you know. That's how I do it
11:44 with a lot of anxiousness. It's just like this will be over
11:48 you know just 15 minutes and I just have to do this.
11:52 And I think it went okay. There was a lot of wind on the beach and
11:56 my hair looked crazy but you know
12:00 it was fun. Cool.
12:04 Let's see.
12:08 Any other thoughts?
12:12 Do you have any advice for upcoming
12:16 students? About anything but
12:20 particularly as one gets towards
12:24 graduating and stepping out of the school?
12:28 I would just encourage people to like
12:32 try things you know.
12:36 Like I think one regret I might have had is that I didn't feel like I took
12:40 enough risks or did enough while I was you know here
12:44 that like because I was afraid of like messing up or
12:48 failing you know or like judgment which didn't come from like
12:52 my childhood library because that's not really a thing that we do here. It came from something
12:56 else you know. Just what I was understanding.
13:00 And so I would say like yeah just
13:04 try what you can and feel like free to do whatever you want.
13:08 While you have that ability. Because like you know
13:12 if I could have a few more years you know back of being here
13:16 like I think I would have just explored more stuff
13:20 like I don't know. Technically you would
13:24 have another year. Technically I would have another year. But you mean kind of back in the
13:28 yeah back in like you know. Back when you were younger. Back when I was a bit younger.
13:32 I'm talking to like my brother you know he's like 13. I don't know.
13:36 So up and coming. Like yeah. Just do what you enjoy.
13:40 Do what you enjoy.
13:44 I think that's a great way to sign off. Thank you Parker.
13:48 Thanks Shane. Appreciate having the first interview.
13:52 Maybe this will inspire more. No I think you did a pretty good job. I think
13:56 you know you don't have questions thought out but you can bring them out of you.
14:00 Thought you answered beautifully. We rate this
14:04 as a 5 out of 5 interview. Okay. Thank you all for listening and
14:08 have a good one.
