Summary

First week fully online. Community requires interacting with complex humans - different expressions, verbalizations, body language. Brain creates probability models of how people interact. Online loses much of this - video helps ground us. Requires far more effort than in-person. Encouragement to connect, even just witness others on Discord.

0:00 Welcome to ANI, In the Air, Online, and Around Baltimore.
0:06 This is Talk About Tuesday, where I talk about some aspect of the school.
0:10 So this is the first week of our fully transitioned online of the 2020-2021 school year.
0:19 And I thought I'd talk a little bit about community.
0:25 So a really big, important component of our school is community.
0:31 Basically it's having to interact with other human beings.
0:37 It sounds like not a hard requirement to be able to satisfy, but surprisingly, it really
0:47 is.
0:50 Every human being is a very complex organism to interact with.
0:56 A lot of different variability, a lot of different notions, do a lot of different things, hear
1:03 things differently from one another, express things differently, verbalize, non-verbalize
1:11 things differently.
1:12 A lot of complexity in really understanding and knowing another human being.
1:18 And now, when you have that applied to a whole community, it's quite a set of skills to
1:25 figure it all out.
1:28 And so, you know, that's what happens in person.
1:31 Even for people who don't seem to be engaged, as long as they're around other people in
1:36 some fashion, they often are.
1:42 You know, they might be sitting in a room quietly, but they're still around.
1:47 Their brain's picking up on things, you know, varying extents.
1:52 And you know, so what is the brain doing?
1:55 Well, the brain is, I think, creating like sort of probability models of how everybody
2:02 interacts there.
2:04 The brain is almost like learning to replicate, you know, what those people will be likely
2:12 doing.
2:14 And part of it is, you know, the actual physical motions and stuff.
2:21 When you catch someone out of the corner of your eye, you often know who it is just by
2:27 the way they move.
2:31 You know, and whenever debating or arguing someone, when you've known them long enough,
2:38 you know exactly what they're going to say, you know their behaviors, you know what that
2:42 raised eyebrow means, yeah, I'm looking at me, I love raising one eyebrow.
2:49 So now, when we go online, you know, so much of that is gone.
2:55 And I think that that's what makes it sort of really hard.
3:01 That's why, you know, having the ability to see the videos of one another is very helpful.
3:12 It grounds us, it's not just the voices, you know, it's all of it.
3:20 And so, I mean, that's a challenge that we need to deal with being online.
3:28 How do we connect with one another?
3:33 It's just not easy.
3:34 It really requires far more effort than it happens in person.
3:41 And ideally, we will only be fully online for a short time.
3:46 But unfortunately, the world is far from ideal.
3:49 And the likelihood is that it will be a bit of time before we can come back in person.
3:55 So what can we do?
3:57 Well, all we can really do is just try to keep connecting with one another.
4:03 Have to settle for, you know, text writing, vocalizations, and ideally some video chatting,
4:16 and you know, seeing one another and appreciating what it is that they do.
4:23 So yeah, that's kind of my thought of the Tuesday, basically, my words to everyone who
4:35 might be listening to this is to really think about how you can connect with other people
4:41 in some fashion, or at least witness them.
4:45 You don't even necessarily need to say or do anything, just be around people, observe
4:53 them, you know.
4:57 So we have this community and, you know, hopefully everyone can get on Discord and make connections
5:05 and all that good stuff.
5:08 So that's my hope.
5:10 Alright, well, that's enough for this Tuesday.
5:16 See you all next time.
