0:00 Welcome to ANI In The Air, Under The Tent, and Around Baltimore, your daily podcast briefing
0:05 of all the goings-ons, ins and arounds, or to need a Sudbury School.
0:08 So today is Monday, June 7th, and as I speak, the cicadas are going crazy, and the temperature
0:16 right now is approximately 94 and the decibel level is around 87.
0:21 This is a very loud noise.
0:24 They seem to love the heat.
0:29 Our students are less fond of it, so while there were people outside at various times
0:34 today, for the most part, this is definitely more of an indoor thing.
0:40 Kids love the cold and they seem not to be so fond of the heat.
0:44 But there are always some who enjoy being out, and the cicadas certainly love it.
0:56 So, what happened today?
0:59 We had our mandatory announcements today.
1:03 We've got three more weeks of school left, and then we're done.
1:07 We are in overtime right now.
1:11 Most years we would have had our last day be on Friday, but this year we're going longer,
1:17 and it's going to be fun with all these cicadas.
1:20 So that's nice.
1:24 And, what else, the yearbooks are all done and they are being printed as we speak and
1:33 should arrive, as far as I know, in the last week of school.
1:37 So that's exciting.
1:39 I've gotten to see a preview of it and it looks pretty wild, it's going to be pretty
1:47 neat.
1:48 Let's see, what else?
1:50 Ah, announcements, I announced school meeting JC clerk elections should be taking place.
1:58 I don't know if anyone will step up for them, but hopefully next year we'll be in a more
2:05 normal place of having much more active JC school meeting clerks from various school
2:11 meeting members.
2:13 We also are starting the discussion of the year-long clerkships, deciding on how to proceed
2:25 with that.
2:28 And, what else, oh, end of year show, if you're interested in performing at the end of year
2:34 show or helping out with the sets or anything else, do let Caroline know in one fashion
2:40 or another.
2:41 I never really pay attention to the details, I just know, refer them to Caroline.
2:47 So, if that's you, go for it.
2:51 What else?
2:52 Oh, I also put out a call if anyone wants to do any interviews on this podcast.
2:58 You know, I've got three more weeks and I'd be happy to do an interview with anyone who
3:03 wishes.
3:04 So, if you listen to this and you'd be like, "I would love to get my voice out to all the
3:10 in-the-air heads out there," then this is the time to do it.
3:15 We've got three weeks.
3:18 Let's see, what else?
3:19 Yeah, there was no JC, no cases, still no cases written up, I don't know.
3:27 I guess we are in a low JC point, so that's kind of nice.
3:34 I'm sure we'll have one soon enough, and then there is tomorrow's school meeting and, what
3:51 else?
3:52 I think that's about all I have to say about that.
4:01 So it's Millions Monday, I was thinking this week I'd do a deep dive into computer stuff.
4:08 So, today just futzing around with some numbers involving computers, tomorrow kind of a Sudbury
4:18 thing about screen time, and then on Wednesday something wondrous about computers, probably
4:27 just the amazing strides that have been made over the past, what is it, 70 years, since
4:34 we first got our first computer.
4:38 Just really astounding, the advancement there.
4:42 And then tip of the week, I don't know, probably some cool stuff about computers.
4:48 So, that's my plan for the week, see how it goes.
4:53 Today I haven't actually thought of anything yet, so this is going to be totally off the
4:57 cuff, not that I have cuffs, I'm in a short sleeve shirt, it's very hot out here, but,
5:05 so what would you want to know about computers, well, how about how much time does a person
5:13 spend on a computer in their life?
5:15 Obviously this is going to vary quite a bit from person to person, but, let's say on average
5:25 throughout your life, you do 4 hours a day of computer time, and that includes being
5:31 on the phone, an actual computer, whatever, so 4 hours a day, could include watching stuff
5:39 on an iPad, I'm going to draw the line at a TV TV watching that, although maybe if it's
5:48 a bit more chip based TV, it could be a little different thing, but anyway, I'm going to
5:53 go 4 hours a day your whole life, so how many hours in a life, or how many days in a life,
6:02 so 4 hours a day, there's something like 3-4 hundred days in a year, I'm just going to
6:13 go with 300, kind of shine on the 100, so that's 1200 hours in a year, and then so in
6:23 10 years that's 1200, so that's 12,000, and then if you make it through 10 decades, so
6:33 you hit 100, that's a little bit on the over side, that's 120,000 hours of being on a computer,
6:40 and the percentage of your life on that, well, if it's 4 hours a day and you've got 24 hours,
6:46 then it's 1/6 of your life, what is 1/6 you ask, well, it's something like 15, 16, 17%,
7:00 somewhere on there, whatever it takes, and so that's cool, what else, how many computers
7:11 are there, that's a good question, right, well, let's stick with the US, where I might
7:21 have some hope of understanding the answer to that question, I'm going to just stick
7:25 with personal stuff, I'm going to guess that on the business side, you kind of like double
7:31 the numbers from the individual side to get a total number, although there's lots of varied
7:41 computers for business uses, you know, the data centers and so forth, I don't know, but
7:46 on the personal side, something I have some experience with, you know, the question would
7:51 be how many computers does a person have, now, it certainly depends on age, and various
8:01 interests, so you know, you've got a, what are the possible things, you've got a laptop,
8:05 you've got a desktop, you've got phones, you've got tablets, maybe watches, do you want to
8:12 count watches, smart watches, I don't know, so maybe just do, thinking of a laptop for
8:25 just about every adult, maybe like 80% of adults, I don't know, desktops, maybe one
8:37 per household, there's like 100 million households, and phones, I'm just going to say everybody's
8:44 got a phone, I know some of the young ones don't, and then tablets, I'm just going to
8:50 say that kind of fits in with laptops, so laptops/tablets, everybody's got one, right?
8:57 So 100 million desktops, and everybody's got a phone, maybe multiple ones, I'm just going
9:04 to say 400 million phones in this country, 100 million laptops, so that's 500 million,
9:10 and then I've got other laptop/tablets, so that'd be like, maybe 200 million laptops
9:21 or so, yeah, 200, 250, whatever it takes, maybe 200 million, so that's 300 and, did
9:31 I say, 700 million, 700 million computers rounded up to a billion, maybe a billion devices,
9:39 cool, I have been taken over by some sort of under the tent activity, very exciting,
9:47 so I will say adieu, and I have no idea if my numbers were correct, but they were fun
9:53 to make, I will talk to you later, see you when I see you.
