0:00 Welcome to Arts and Ideas, in the air, under the tent, and around Baltimore, your daily
0:06 podcast briefing of all the goings ons, ins and arounds, Arts and Ideas, Sudbury School.
0:10 So today, another beautiful day.
0:13 It's a little hot under the tent during school meeting, but it was pretty nice.
0:20 I had a nice short JC, three cases, two of which got dropped and one got a warning, and
0:29 you know, I do have something to think about that, it's just, you know, there's something
0:37 to be said for having, you know, just being called to account, even, you know, regardless
0:46 of whatever happened and just having that conversation, you know, no consequences happen.
0:53 It does become nice and sort of known.
0:59 So there's that.
1:01 We had school meeting, which I think was like an hour and a half almost, which was much
1:08 longer than I was anticipating.
1:13 We recreated Field Trip Corporation, and we, well, have an item for assembly from school
1:23 meeting.
1:24 Basically, a former student wants to come for the last week of school, which ordinarily
1:30 would be fine, but we have a prohibition against visitors.
1:33 I mean, they're still of student age, and they are fully vaccinated, so it seems fine.
1:41 But technically, by our medical policy, we can't do that.
1:44 So we'll have to submit something for assembly, which is happening this Thursday, that's cool.
1:53 We also had a discussion on, like, just bringing it to a school meeting, you know, that there
2:04 is money for private schools if they do standardized testing.
2:08 So we talked about it and firmly rejected the idea of any kind of mandatory standardized
2:18 testing here at the school.
2:20 So no thanks to the money, I guess, but, you know, there was reasons to go for it in terms
2:26 of, you know, being open to a wider range of people for the school, but ultimately the
2:35 price is just too high.
2:37 And then we talked about what we liked or disliked about the changes we made this year.
2:45 Parking lot being closed was a big win.
2:49 Having no short time was a big loser.
2:52 They are very clear that they love short time.
2:56 And everything else was kind of a bit of a muddled, you know, response.
3:01 It could go either way, but yeah, some of the changes were good, some were not.
3:13 So yeah, I guess we'll see what happens when we can finally unwind all this stuff.
3:18 But I think the closing of the parking lot will probably become permanent.
3:23 Maybe we can make that permanent assembly/school meeting.
3:28 That's really unclear whose jurisdiction that is.
3:35 And I think short time will come back whenever it's appropriate because that was a very...
3:39 People really love short time.
3:41 I was surprised.
3:43 Yeah, it's just a nice fun time.
3:47 And there was a student who was new this year who actually came up and spoke in favor of
3:51 short time, even though they'd never experienced it.
3:53 They were just like, "This sounds like a great idea."
3:55 So well, there's that.
3:58 All right, and then we had a nice practice thesis defense.
4:04 We've got two more over the next two days.
4:07 And yeah, it's great to sit and talk with the graduates and go over their thesis and
4:13 reading their theses.
4:14 I mean, it's really been enjoyable so far.
4:18 It's really an honor to be seeing our students about to go embark into the adult world and
4:28 kind of reflecting on their time here and what's coming up and just seeing the kind
4:33 of great presentation that they do, both in their writing and presenting.
4:40 I kind of understand why some schools have it actually at assembly than doing some stuff,
4:45 because it's great to share.
4:48 But I'm happy that that is what has happened.
4:52 Anyway, I did a talk about Tuesday on how do students know what they don't know kind
4:57 of thing, rambled for a while.
4:59 And I guess that's it.
5:01 So have a good one and I will see you when I see you.
