0:00 - Welcome to ANI in the Air Online and Around Baltimore,
0:05 your daily podcast briefing on the goings ons,
0:08 ins and rounds, arts and ideas, Sudbury School.
0:10 So today is Farewell Friday.
0:14 And so we'll kind of look back on the week.
0:19 The events of the day I feel like were a little bit minimal.
0:24 There was another Minecraft hangout at 10 a.m.
0:27 and then there was some role playing game
0:31 that was hosted at three.
0:35 And there were some funny postings on Discord.
0:41 Be sure to check out Discord if you haven't in a while.
0:44 It's always good and fun.
0:47 Upcoming next week is a short week, we have Thanksgiving.
0:54 So we're actually closed Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
0:58 On Monday we'll have our usual announcements at 11.05.
1:03 Please make sure to attend.
1:04 And we'll have a school meeting at one on Tuesday.
1:09 And we have an assembly meeting that night
1:14 to discuss the numbers and further actions.
1:17 Speaking of the numbers,
1:22 so there are two numbers that we tracked for our policy.
1:26 One is the positivity rate,
1:29 which is the number of positive tests
1:32 for the number of tests given, more or less.
1:37 And our threshold was set at 5%.
1:41 We have now in Baltimore City, as of November 19th,
1:45 hit 7.62%, which is pretty high
1:49 given the breadth of testing that is going on.
1:53 We are at the highest testing volume we've been at of,
1:59 it sounds like
2:03 around, we're testing 40,000 tests a day
2:12 in Maryland, I guess.
2:15 Doesn't specifically talk about Baltimore.
2:19 And then there is the case rate,
2:22 which is number of people per 100,000.
2:27 So we had set our number threshold at 15
2:32 and we are now at 42 per 100,000.
2:36 So basically for every 100,000 people,
2:39 there are 42 cases, I guess.
2:43 And I guess that's kind of new cases per day.
2:49 So that can start to add up quickly.
2:54 That is the highest rate we have been at
2:56 during this entire pandemic.
2:58 We also have, we don't track this for our policy,
3:03 but another useful thing to look at
3:04 is the hospital bed utilization.
3:08 This is across Maryland.
3:10 We are currently at 1,200 total beds used.
3:15 I don't know how many beds are available.
3:18 The peak before this, which happened in the beginning of May
3:21 was around 1,700 beds.
3:24 And just for also kind of local context,
3:27 at the beginning of November, it was at 500.
3:30 So we more than doubled the use of the hospital beds
3:34 over the past three weeks.
3:37 So yeah, that's our weekly number update report.
3:42 So it doesn't look terribly good
3:46 for coming back in person at this current time.
3:49 Thanksgiving is coming up
3:52 and the official recommendation is stay home
3:57 and don't go to family gatherings.
4:01 Yeah, just be safe.
4:04 But it sounds like a lot of people will not listen to that.
4:09 But hopefully our community will stay safe.
4:14 So this was our first fully online week.
4:16 I hope you all had a good week with it.
4:20 You know, this is a challenging time for us.
4:27 It's not enough just to do what you want
4:31 in order to keep this community going,
4:32 but you actually have to reach out more in person.
4:35 You can just do whatever you want
4:36 and that naturally creates community.
4:38 But being online, you really have to try to make an effort
4:41 to stay connected to people.
4:44 Ideally, this is happening on Discord
4:47 so other people outside of your networks
4:50 can see and participate,
4:53 but at least hope that everyone is connecting online
4:56 in some fashion with people.
4:59 It's good not to be isolated.
5:01 So that is I guess that for this podcast.
5:07 Thanks for listening and talk to you all later.
