0:00 Welcome to Arts and Ideas in the Air, under the tent, and around Baltimore, your daily podcast briefing of all the goings ons in and around Sudbury School.
0:10 So today, we had a school meeting. And we also had a fairly long JC. We had such a long JC, in fact, that we had a case we couldn't do.
0:22 So, that was kind of new this year. And, you know, the cases were kind of interesting. And some good debates.
0:37 And again, sort of this stop rule has come up a few times about, you know, people wanting, people see somebody breaking a rule, and they say stop, and then they want to have the stop rule apply to say, well, you need to stop.
0:55 And of course, and so I read the stop rule, and it's about, you know, somebody being engaged in a directed action, and I say, well, you know, and the person being the object of that directed action saying stop, I think that's fundamentally different.
1:11 Now, I can imagine us adding to the stop rule, saying like, if you're engaged in an activity that breaks a rule and someone says stop, then you should stop. But it seems kind of pointless, because if it breaks a rule, one shouldn't be doing it in the first place.
1:25 So, I don't actually understand why adding this would do anything. You know, it's kind of like saying, having a rule that says you shouldn't break rules, it's not useful.
1:39 And in fact, I believe we had a student who, as a joke, tried to get that passed a few times, no breaking rules rule, so you could just apply that in every case.
1:52 And it's just, you know, as I said, that was a joke, but, you know, I think there's something perhaps more deep about it that, you know, like, I don't know, that taps into something that people want.
2:11 They want to be able to say, not only you shouldn't break rules, but if it's pointing out to you and you continue to break the rules, that's really bad, right?
2:22 If someone, okay, it's not great to break the rules, it's even worse to break the rules when someone's reminding you about the rules and you continue on.
2:31 But I'm not sure that we can navigate that kind of finesse in JC.
2:38 Now in school meeting, we had a bit of technical complications today.
2:45 Hopefully anyone online who cares was able to hear enough about it and, you know, maybe following along with the agenda, but roughly there were some announcements.
3:01 There was a workshop corporation that met after school meeting. I assume it went well, but I don't really know.
3:10 And there'll be an animal corporation meeting tomorrow.
3:17 And I think there was a third thing.
3:22 Oh, Article Club has been moved to Thursday at 11. So, yeah, those were the announcements.
3:31 And then in new business, we had an approval for spending on a pumpkin carving workshop.
3:40 And there was some discussion of making sure that, you know, screens are available for people online at home who want to be carving pumpkins to do so.
3:49 There was also something from me about adding ground clerks to the chicken rules.
3:58 So that passed. Basically, just, you know, until there's an animal corporation, the ground clerks are the default of what goes on.
4:09 And even with an animal corporation, if it kind of lags around, ground clerks are always empowered to do it.
4:16 That's mainly when the animal corporation is in session, because the ground clerks, at least currently, are in fact, you know, will be members of animal corporation.
4:26 I personally like to, the ground clerks are Carolina myself. I personally like to, you know,
4:36 attend those meetings to make sure that we don't end up with any goats on campus. That would make me very sad.
4:44 All right. Although, I mean, I love goats. I just think they last five minutes on here before they wandered off.
4:52 And, anyway. There was also another amendment of a rule passed about outside trying to keep two feet distance from people.
5:05 I am sure they'll take a little bit of time to fully get everyone on board with it.
5:15 But the idea is we want airspace to be clear between people.
5:21 There were some people, we already have a rule, like no direct physical touching, but we had a number of students who would be kind of simulating that very close.
5:34 They'd say, oh, I wasn't touching. But, you know, they're still too close for comfort with this COVID-19.
5:41 Looking real forward to when we don't have to do this anymore.
5:45 And it's really tough because it's like such a natural thing.
5:49 It's such a human thing. But, you know, the people who are, you know, doing a really great service by standing up for our COVID rules.
5:59 You know, they're very stringent and strict and they need to be, but it's like, ah, it just kills me to see that being applied to just the natural instincts of children.
6:10 So, I don't know. I guess we'll see how this goes.
6:16 And then the final thing was an approval from a student to bring home a toy for a couple of days.
6:21 So that was kind of a fun little conversation. It's been a while since we've had that and hopefully that will all go well.
6:29 So that was some of the formal stuff that's been going on today.
6:34 I was involved in all that, which, you know, generally meetings make me sad if it's the most of the day.
6:41 However, since it's all under the big tent, it's not so bad at all.
6:46 It's been a beautiful day here under the tent. And there's another group of students watching the TV under the big tent.
7:00 All sorts of chatter going on. Second group dealing with the swings. Whoa. That's amazing what they get up to.
7:16 And then. Yeah, I don't actually know what's been going on, so I haven't been inside really at all the whole day.
7:26 That's so nice. Anyway, I guess that will end because I have to do my deep cleaning now, but it's great talking to you all.
7:37 I guess I will see you later and make sure to check out Talk About Tuesday, where I talk about running suits and running.
7:44 That's right. Running. You just run or do you wait till you get all your equipment and then you run?
7:51 I'm expecting a little feedback if someone's still listening to my podcast.
7:56 That person's a runner and I'd be curious about how that parable actually fits to reality.
8:02 So anyway, you all have a good time. You stay cool and collected out there and I'll be seeing you around.
