0:00 Welcome to Arts and Ideas in the Air, under the tent, and around Baltimore.
0:06 Due to an unfortunate muting of my microphone, this is the second time around, so it'll either be much better or much worse, so I guess we'll have to see.
0:15 Well, I guess we won't, since we don't have any recording of the first one.
0:19 Today was another lovely, wonderful day here under the tent. Really gorgeous weather, beautiful, absolutely wonderful.
0:27 Today we have a school meeting. It was the first school meeting team to finish their service, so they've now dropped down to the bottom of the list.
0:36 We've had a gaga game going on since before a school meeting and long after it ended. A lot of excitement.
0:46 So, what happened in school meeting today? Well, it was a number of items, but it only took us a half an hour, so that's a very efficient use of our time.
0:58 Basically, announced was reminding everyone that we'll have sort of age-based check-in meetings to discuss challenges for that particular age group. We did this last year, and unless somebody changes the rule, we'll do it again.
1:20 This will be a little bit different because we'll have online people discussing all that, so age differences might even be more important to discuss about this year.
1:31 There will be an assembly meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m. to check in, see how everyone's doing, and a business item of particular importance to us is allowing new families to start having visiting weeks.
1:51 Right now, we do allow existing families to have siblings start here, and we already had one start, Louisa, who's Audrey's sister, and then we're having another visiting week with Matthias, Sarah Kay's brother.
2:11 Both of those have gone very well, no problems with any of our protocols or anything, so we're hopeful that this means that we can start having new people start. We've got plenty of space and beautiful weather, so we think that this is a great time to do this.
2:33 That discussion will be at 7 on Thursday. Tomorrow at 1 p.m., there will be a history seminar lecture, discussion of feminism, and the safety bicycle.
2:45 How do these two go together? Tune in tomorrow and find out. The business part of the agenda was we bought a round net. This is apparently a volleyball-style idea where the net is on the ground, and you spike the ball into the net, and then the ball bounces off.
3:10 It's kind of a trampoline volleyball setup, so that's interesting. I guess it's trying to see what's more popular, gaga or round net ball, so I guess we'll see.
3:25 We think having lots of things outside to do is a good thing in this environment, so hopefully that goes well. We also approved a library corporation budget so we can actually buy books, so that's exciting.
3:43 We amended a rule for how JC and school meeting teams work. Right now we have very little JC going on, I guess probably because we have a lot of space, so there isn't a lot of conflicts, I guess, I don't know.
3:59 So the JC team has kind of been on tap for a while, and we addressed this by saying that if a team doesn't serve on a day, then they get sort of a half-day credit for that service.
4:14 So while it is possible for a team to not serve at all, that would take eight days of not having JC, but it also seems like being on tap to be called for JC for more than eight days seems a little bit much, so we thought that was a good compromise.
4:30 We also passed a couple of amendments to the rules about computers and assignments and equipment, trying to prep up the, you know, getting people to actually have assigned computers for the day. Hopefully that goes well.
4:49 And then we had a discussion about sanitization of musical instruments. That's kind of been bumped out to the musical corporation, so looking forward to seeing that come back.
4:59 We also have a rule about forts now, in terms of just having one person in enclosed forts and making sure there's adequate ventilation before somebody new changes places in there.
5:12 We also had a discussion on elections. We have a lot of different options on how to run elections in this setup. It seemed that the most voiced-upon opinion was to have maybe, like, Anacado doing anonymous elections, so I guess I will take a stab at that and see how that goes.
5:34 So that was a cool meeting, exciting time, and yeah, it was really nice to hang out under the tent and pass some rules and have some discussions. Always exciting.
5:50 Let's see. As I mentioned before, tomorrow there is a history seminar at 1pm on feminism and the bicycle. Safety bicycle.
6:04 Other thing of note to these podcast listeners is I have tried a new thing called Talk About Tuesday. It's in honor of the Talk About Tuesdays we used to have in person where we'd sit around and have some of Carolina's famous vegetarian chili.
6:23 So good. Looking forward to the end of the dark time so we can get some of those veggie chili again. So good. Anyway, we'd sit around, chat, talk about the model. Since we can't do that, I thought I'd talk about the model.
6:39 I've been here for a number of years and I've been on missions, family relations, and just generally observant. So today I took a stab at my sort of opinion as to how it is that our students become so incredibly capable by just letting them do what they want to do.
7:06 So it's something I've been trying to communicate in some form for a long time. I've had a very hard time writing it down. Hopefully this audio version gives a glimmer of at least some of what I've been thinking about it.
7:21 The short summary is, failure is good. You learn a lot and you get a lot better real quick from it. Respect the laughter. Alright, well that's enough for today for a second time. Have a great day and see you all later. Amusingly, it's almost the same amount of time. Bye bye.
